How to Get on Section 8 List

Section 8/Rent Subsidies

HUD helps apartment owners offer reduced rents to low-income residents.  

Income limits depend on the median income for the county or metropolitan area in which you choose to live.

Search HUD.gov for nationwide listing of rent subsidized apartments

Contact or visit the management office of each apartment building that interests you.

 

Public Housing

Public Housing was established to provide decent and safe rental housing for eligible low-income families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.

How To Apply

Contact your local Housing Authority where you will be assigned an HA representative who will work directly with you.

Complete a written application.  Your HA representative can help you do this.

Your HA representative will work with you to gather the documentation you will need (birth certificates, tax returns, etc) to verify the information provided on your application.

Once you are considered eligible, your name will be placed on a waiting list.  Your HA will contact you once your name is next on the list.
